Business and being Christian – mutally exclusive?

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Does a business need to be Christian led or employ Christians to need a Marketplace Chaplain?

The short answer is a categorical no! Often business leaders can be quick to dismiss the idea of a Marketplace Chaplaincy simply because of the faith aspect. Sometimes this can be because of the fact that they do not hold the same faith for whatever reason and other times it can be because they are aware that their workforce is not predominantly Christian oriented.

Do you need to be Christian to work with Marketplace Chaplains? For whatever reason, Marketplace Chaplains want to break down this barrier. Although as a chaplain, a Marketplace Chaplain is clearly entering the workplace as an authoritative representative of the Christian faith. However, to limit the work done by a chaplain to simply one of faith issues would be a huge understatement of their work.

Perhaps the most important goal of a Marketplace Chaplain is to meet people where they stand and where their needs are. A chaplain is first and foremost there to serve the workforce he or she is attached to.

By having a dedicated person whose sole responsibility is to talk to people, listen to employee concerns, understand not only the business as a workforce, but also the company aims and objectives, companies who employ a Marketplace Chaplain have discovered that they are employing someone who is not only for the employees of the company, but also for the company itself.

It is the practicalities of running alongside companies and supporting both levels of employee and management that has given Marketplace Chaplains the success rates and ROI levels over the previous 25 years. Being a Christian will not make your business more successful, but having the support of a Marketplace Chaplain will.

Employee Retention – An Independent Ear.

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Although it’s possible to put the work Marketplace Chaplains Europe do very simply under broad headers such as Employee Retention or Increasing Productivity, and indeed as is so often the case in business terms the company is required to do so. In a fast paced world where sales pitching has to capture the imagination and interest of the target party within seconds, some of the very valuable work that MCHAP provide often gets overlooked.

Independent Ear for Employee RetentionRather than the generic incentives offered with promises of ROI – rewarding employees for good productivity, the MCHAP way can often be a much subtler approach.

By providing an on-site chaplain, the personal “touch” that is so vital in situations of tension, tragedy or even just miscommunication can sometimes in itself be enough to resolve situations. Quite often an employee requires just a figure for support during a time of need, someone who can listen and provide an independant ear.

Employees on the shopfloor in a company would naturally confide in a member of management about a tragedy that has occurred in the family. However it is somewhat rare to have members of a company confiding in members higher up the hierarchy, or indeed for members of management to confide in employees ‘lower ranked’ than themselves.

One of the fantastic things about employing a chaplain is that he or she can have a complete perspective of the company. As a result of the afore mentioned employee confiding in the chaplain, it may be that the chaplain can then tactfully inform management of the situation and help bring the tension to a resolution.

With this birdseye perspective and an independent ear, Marketplace Chaplains Europe are often able to help shed new light on issues that may have simple solutions, but need that outside view just to catalyse the resolution process.

Celebrating Employee Care and HR Support for 25 years!

Friday, May 1st, 2009

This year Marketplace Chaplains is celebrating 25 years of Employee Care and HR management support.

Marketplace Chaplains celebrate employee care for 25 years!A celebratory edition of the Marketplace Chaplains magazine “Marketplace” is now available complete with the 2008 Annual Report.

At Marketplace Chaplains, our purpose has always been to value people, help people, care for people and pick them up when life knocks them down, bandage them up and get them back on the road of life reads one article. Another article gives the timeline of how Marketplace Chaplains first developed, including starting in 1984 with The Bonneau Companies and Sysco Foods.

Since January 2008, Marketplace Chaplains has of course expanded overseas to the UK and Europe. The work of all of the chaplain groups can be summed up in the following testimonial found in the Readers column written by Linda Crawford;

“I would like to take this opportunity to express how thankful I am for Marketplace Chaplains and all the support the chaplains provide for our residents, families and staff. I have never been employed where I have had this service provided and, I must say, it is a great benefit to all.
The chaplains are very personable, caring and friendly always asking how things are going, and if there is anyone in need of any special attention. If a resident or staff member is ill and in hospital – you can bet the chaplains will be there to visit. I have known the chaplains to come in the middle of the night to support the family and staff when a death has occured.
We like to refer to our chaplains as our “TLC”: Tender Loving Chaplains. That is truly what they are, and we are so fortunate to have their services available to us.”.
